Some words of advice from a recent college graduate currently in the process of studying for and taking the CPA exam:

Don’t be too ambitious

Yes, you are eager to get started … and finished! But don’t try to take on too much at once. Some level of sacrifice is going to be part of the equation. Make sure to maintain a balance in your life.

Talk to others who have gone before you

Find out what worked for them and how they approached the exam. Find out what challenges they faced and learn from their experiences. Don’t forget to consider which version of the exam they took given recent changes to the exam.

Enjoy the summer after graduation

You will be going through a transitional phase of your life. Enjoy it. Begin preparing for the CPA exam in earnest as you start working, as you will likely encounter situations in your job that will help you better understand the concepts you are studying.

Take advantage of available time

There are times when new associates roll off engagements or projects early and have time available until they begin their next assignment. Often firms will allow individuals to study for the CPA exam during these “free” periods. Use this time wisely. This will not go unnoticed by others.
