Selden Fox would like to congratulate 12 year old Bella Meincke for her hard work and dedication she displayed at this year’s recently completed Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. She is the daughter of one of Selden Fox’s alumni Chris Meincke. Bella was selected from hundreds of applicants and their essays to be one of the 16 members of the Youth Crew. The Walk, which took place in Chicago the first weekend in June, consisted of 26.2 miles on Saturday and 13.1 miles on Sunday. However, young Bella worked Friday through Sunday. Her duties involved setting up the Wellness Village on Friday night, camping out that evening and waking at 4 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday to support the walkers by providing needed refreshment and encouragement.
Bella’s work for the Walk began way before June when she started her fundraising efforts in January. Her goal was to raise $2,000. In addition to funds raised on the Avon website, Bella organized a “Penny Challenge” at her school. Ten classrooms participated for one week with points given for the number of pennies put into a bucket in each classroom. The winners of the Challenge were the fourth graders. The lucky winners had bragging rights but, more importantly the class of 28 students each got two giant cookies made by Chris! The Penny Challenge alone raised $1,279.74. Bella improved her muscles hauling many pounds of pennies home to be counted over a 30 hour period.
Bella’s other creative fundraising efforts involved convincing her dad Gary to organize a poker tournament with all the proceeds going to the Walk. She also attended dinners organized by her grandparents raising more funds by talking about how important this cause is.
This was Bella’s third year of participating and each year she has raised the most money of the Youth Crew. Her final fundraising total this year was $3,191.
