Searching for your first professional job upon graduation can be a daunting task—getting your resume developed and sent, going through numerous interviews, waiting on employer responses—all the while asking yourself “Which firm is the best fit for me?”. I found myself in that situation not too long ago and ultimately chose to work at Selden Fox … and couldn’t be happier with my decision.

Accounting Internship

When I was hired, I really did not know what to expect. I did not have the opportunity for an internship during college, so I was unsure what the public accounting environment would be like. Selden Fox was one of my top picks because of the firm culture I perceived. Large firms were not appealing because I didn’t want to be a small fish in a big pond. I was seeking a sense of community where I had the opportunity to know everyone’s name throughout the firm. A mid-size firm like Selden Fox would provide me with the environment I was seeking.

I attended the firm’s annual golf outing before I started working in August. This opportunity allowed me to meet my future coworkers and experience the firm culture and would quickly prove invaluable. When I arrived at the outing, I was greeted by the firm’s HR manager who put me at ease, assuring me that the day was less about golf and more about having a good time and getting to know the people. Several hours and an undisclosed number of golf strokes later, I was exhausted and sunburned, but had more fun than I ever expected.

First Day – Orientation

My first day of orientation was a couple weeks later, and I was filled with anticipation. I was excited yet nervous, but through all the requisite paperwork and office tours became more at ease. With the firm maintaining a hybrid work model, the office was quiet that day, which was a bit of a shock at first, having pictured myself, pre-pandemic, in a bustling workplace with the buzz of conversations and the clicking of keyboards. I have come to find the office atmosphere conducive to productivity, although having the opportunity to work remotely is a convenient benefit.

Once my orientation week was complete, I was out on my very first audit the following Monday. Again, I was anxious and hoped I was sufficiently prepared, but I trusted my schooling, my training, and my supervisors at the client site. As I have found, one of the biggest advantages of working at Selden Fox is the ability to get right out into the field alongside experienced and knowledgeable staff, getting my hands dirty right from the start. Having been put right into the mix, I have learned something new and valuable from one client engagement to the next, which, at the end of the day, confirms why I chose to work at Selden Fox.
