Security is a feeling that everyone needs including businesses, families, and individuals. Without a base level of security, it would be impossible to trust and feel safe. As we know all too well, there is an ever-increasing number of digital attacks that leave personal, financial and other data at risk. Cybersecurity has become a top priority for businesses seeking to ensure sensitive data does not end up in the wrong hands.

Cybersecurity Tips - Chicago CPA

While many large companies have implemented sophisticated cybersecurity program, often times small businesses don’t give it the same time and attention. Unfortunately, small businesses are just as much as a target for cyber criminals as are large companies. While you don’t need a comprehensive, enterprise wide plan, there are key steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of information loss, business disruption and revenue loss resulting from a cyber incident. To help clients, prospects and other prepare, Selden Fox has highlighted some of the Top Ten Cybersecurity Tips as outlined by the U.S. Small Business Administration below.

Cybersecurity Tips

  • Install antivirus software and antispyware is essential on all devices—and it needs to be updated regularly which is more often than you think.
  • Use firewall and encrypt information, including and possibly most importantly your Wi-Fi network.
  • Create and enforce security policies for employees.
  • Educate your employees—they hold the keys to your data, they need to know how to protect it.
  • Require complex passwords and possibly multifactor authentication.
  • Backup your data on all computers regularly which could mean daily or even more often.
  • Protect access to computers from outsiders.
  • Develop and enforce mobile device policies.

Proactive Planning

What is important to note on the list above is these are all actions a business needs to take proactively. Although an initial action needs to be taken—policies prepared, software installed, etc. it is the maintenance and enforcement moving forward that is the key to keeping your data safeguarded. Once there is a lack of enforcement or best practices are not followed, the risk for a cyberattack or data breach will only increase.
